Public Speaking: Confident Posture

Did you know that it only takes about 3 seconds for people to pass judgement on you when they meet you? There are tons of different non-verbal factors that come into play here (I'll keep you guessing and save them for future posts). The factor I'd like to look at today is your posture.

Remember that people judge you from the minute they see you, not the minute you step on stage or to the front of the boardroom. Begin preparing yourself for your talk before you enter the room you'll be speaking in.

Push your shoulders back, raise your chin, pull in that belly and stick out that chest. It's amazing how when you look confident you also feel more confident. Enter the room like you own the place. You have every right to be there. Everyone who is there is there because they want to hear what you have to say. Your thoughts and words are important. Your posture should also show that!

In addition, proper posture will help you with your breathing and voice projection during your talk. By standing up straight with your chin slightly higher than horizontal you are actually opening up your airway. This is important for voice projection since your voice travels on your exhaling breath. You need to be able to take a nice deep breath and use your diaphragm to push that air out again.

Thank you.

ASSALAMUALAIKUM.
here i want to share some tips "HOW TO HAVE A GOOD POSTURE".

Imagine that your head is attached three hooks hanging form the ceiling.hahaha. The idea is that you want your whole body to flow down from you head.

Another way is press your head, shoulders, and heels against the wall. Leave some room between your lower back and the wall. Now walk away while maintaining this posture.

Does it weird right? How ever this is a confident posture. it also can help us to overcome fear to the public speaking. Confident posture helps attract the audience. It shows that you feel comfortable and are in control.
THANK YOU.

There are the aspect that can help you to improve your speaking posture:

Begin your speech by standing on the balls of your feet. This will give you balance for the rest of the body and will help you to be erect without looking robotic.

Avoid shifting the weight of your body as you speak. This can lead to standing on one foot or moving back and forth like a porch swing. Start out using the balls of the feet technique and occasionally take a step to show changes in the direction of your presentation.

Thank you....

Assalammualaikum to madam..

I agree with what point that madam giving. Posture is important thing when doing a speech. Here I would like to give some point that can be use for people who want to give their speech. What should we do is if you as a Muslim, you can start the speech with pray with ask to make you calm, relax and doing well when giving a speech. Second is to make sure your mind is relax with clear your mind and think what just you need to say and last is control your voice and tone, it can represent your condition of feeling mood either you fear, happy, sad or else. So I hope you can make yourself comfortable when giving a speech, relax, and control your voice and tone. That all and thank you.

Assalamualaikum..

Good posture when giving a speak will attract speaker to our speech and it make your speech interesting although you have less point on your speech.

Standing balance. Distribute your weight evenly on both feet. Stand tall, don't slouch. For me, i prefer to wear a high heels. This way, even if i do hide behind something, height will almost cancel that little factor out.

Make some movement, from side to side of the stage. Not rocking or swaying or shaking your hand. This will show your nervous.

Remember to breathe.Just remember to space out your words and to breathe naturally. Many times anxiety will make us rush through a speech. It's good having an extra second between your sentences than to have your sentences become jumbled together while you are heaving for air and people will laugh at you.

Thank you

Assalamualaikum madam,

I got a few tips that can be use to gain confident when doing public speaking.
You can change your feelings just by changing your posture. Try it. Slouch down, act depressed, and shuffle as you walk. If you feel more depressed, stand up straight. Put your head and comfortable yourself. You’ll feel more confident with great posture.

Great posture conveys confidence and that you are in control and attracts respect. Slouched posture emits negative energy and can subconsciously slightly push people away.

Next time you are in public, watch those with good posture and those with bad. Feel the vibes coming off of them. You’ll notice the difference. Hehe.

Thank You

Assalamualaikum and thank you for your post. As we know, non-verbal communication, or body language, is an important part of public speaking. Your body language includes your posture, movement, gestures, facial expressions, eye contact and voice. At the very least, your body language should not distract the audience and with a little practice, it can help you convey confidence and help the audience see your message more clearly. So regarding on the post that have being discussed, I would like to give some tips about how to have a good posture of public speaking.

- Have you ever watched a speaker sway or rock at the podium or in front of a room? It's very distracting and can detract from even the most interesting presentation.

- How you appear to the audience will have an impact on their reaction to what you are going to tell them. Your posture and the way you conduct yourself on the platform is an important part of your presentation. Your objective is to be comfortable and controlled while you are presenting. You want the audience to see that you are relaxed and in control (no matter how you really feel!).

- Stand up and spread your feet about 6 to 8 inches apart, parallel to each other with your toes pointed straight ahead to achieve a comfortable speaking position. Then, flex your knees and put your weight on the balls of your feet. Standing in this position will stop any swaying or rocking motion and will diminish any distracting heel movements.

- Stand up straight and face the audience head-on. Keep your posture open with arms relaxed and hanging down at your sides. If your arms are crossed in front it may make you seem defensive. Hold your head up high with your chin up. Having your chin raised gives you the aura of being in control; chin down connotes acquiescence. Visual signals that make you appear not to be in control will detract from your presentation.

- Reading from prepared notes or a script contributes to the problem of lowering your chin. One way to eliminate this is to use 8 ½ x 11 inch paper. Write on only the top two-thirds of the page so your eye doesn't move down or you drop your chin, which also makes your voice go down.

- If you must read word for word from a manuscript, use the scope technique -- slide your thumb and pointer finger down the page, scoping one section at a time. This will help you to find your place after you look up at the audience. It is critical that the manuscript is easy to read.

- When you are seated, you want to look energized and confident. You don't want to lean or slouch or appear too comfortable or relaxed. Proper seated posture when you are presenting (or just want to look good at a meeting) is sitting straight up in your chair, spine straight, with your feet flat on the floor and hands open on the table.

Thank You. =)

Assalamualaikum madam,

The first impression comes from what the audience see than form what they hear and for now i will talk about visual delivery particularly on how to appear to the audience. As a public speaker, physical appearance, posture, facial expressions, eye contact, body movements and gestures all influence audience's perception. But here i will touch on the confident posture of a public speaker must have.

Good posture is nothing more than standing straight and having our "chest out" and "stomach in". Proper posture makes the speaker look and feel comfortable and aids voice projection and poise.

Thank you for you post.It have helped me a lot in gaining even more knowledge about public speaking and for sure,I'll give it a try sometimes.

I have to agree with you on how confident posture helps with our breathing and voice projection during our talk.Without realizing, confident posture also helps in reducing speech anxiety.Smooth breathing is important for you to have a smooth speech with less coughing, less throat rubbing activity and less drinking during the speech. With everything less from those action, you'll somehow look much confident.

Here I would like to share something with you which is,personally i think, confident posture is actually the posture that you are comfortable with that will lead to your confidence.Be free to be yourself. It is your speech anyway. So just be in the posture that you want yet still appropriate for the speech.

Yes,people will judge you the second they sees you. That is what people called first impression.First impression in anyway,is also important and useful in gaining your listeners attention. But it depends on what kind of first impression you get, negative or positive.Usually, I bare in mind that people have negative first impression on me.So I choose to give a very good speech that will change their whole impression about me.Because to me, that is my way of gaining confidence because I want the power. The power of being able to change people thoughts.

Last but not least, only you can decide what best suits you and what can make you feel confidence and be confident. It is your speech anyway.Just nailed it!

Thank you. =)

a person's posture do affect the way of audience's attention towards the speech.we should stand up straight showing that we are ready to deliver our speech.this way, audience will note that we are serious about delivering it and soon they will pay attention to us.during you speech,u shouldn't stick to only one position because it will bore your audience..you should make a variety of position such move side-by-side but not too frequently or it will look like you are dancing on the stage..apart from that, you should interact more with audience plus make some jokes so that they will assume you not as a speaker but as a friend whom are talking to them

we can do some answer question session to make sure people understand on what you speaking and make sure that they pay attention on you.
confident posture will gives audience knows that you are confident and really want they hear what you are gonna to speaks.
the ways you take breath is the most important actually,if you take a deep breath in and exhales it without nice exhales the audience will knows thats you are actually tired and no more interested to speaks so we have to do proprely inhale and exhales.last but not least is confident posture will make audience knows that we have highest confident level and they will pay attention on you more.

How to have good posture,
Another way is to back up against the wall and press your head, shoulders, and heels against the wall. Leave some room between your lower back and the wall. Now walk away while maintaining this posture.

For speaking posture,
When speaking you want to lean forward slightly. Shift your weight forward to the balls of your feet. This will help plant your body. Your presentation will be more energetic. Keep your feet spread apart about 7-10 inches.

Salam Pn Mimi.

I agree with the tips at the above. Everybody need a good posture to ensure that people do not thinking that a speaker do not ready or lazy. So from that, speaker should be having a good posture while doing the speech in front of people.

People not only listen to you, they also watch your body language. Adopting a good posture tells your audience that you know what you are doing and you care deeply about it. Also, a good posture helps you to speak more clearly and effectively.
Here I have some of tips to be confident posture when trying to give a speech. Firstly, you should be a straight line from your ears, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles. From that, people will be known that you are ready to give a speech and also already prepared for the speech. Then, you head must be centered while do a speech. It is because to avoid people saying that you are so lazy and it will become people do not listen to your speech.

Thank you.

Good Posture

Similarly, the way a person carries herself tells a story. People with slumped shoulders and lethargic movements display a lack of self confidence. They aren’t enthusiastic about what they’re doing and they don’t consider themselves important. By practicing good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Stand up straight, keep your head up, and make eye contact. You’ll make a positive impression on others and instantly feel more alert and empowered.

First of all, thank you for your post. It give me a knowledge to improve my speaking posture.

The audience will pay attention to yuou and your word. If you look them in the eye, you must improve your posture.

Your posture tells how feel about yourself. In other hand, your posture can send the message to your audience. Looking down and not facing people directly gives the impression that we're ashamed or embarrassed.

Improving your posture isn't difficult. It's a simple as doing what your mother probably used to tell you all the time. Your speech starts before you even say one word. Your audience takes notice of you before you bgin to speak. They watch you as you walk to the front of the room. They form an impression about your level confident, your ability, and your credibility during you start trip to the podium.

thank you...

Have a perfect confident is the most important things when give a speech. I agree with other comment. Here the little bit tip that i want to share. First, if you a Muslim, start with Bismillahirahmanirahim. It would make you feel more relax and steady. Second, control your breath and not to being rushing when you give speech. Breath naturally helps you to give a good speech and you should have an extra second between your sentences so the audience can catch up your speech. Next, body language also important to help you convey confidence and help the audience to see your message more clearly. That all the little bit tips from me that i want to share. Assalamualaikum madam,

I’m totally agree with your point about this topic. Yes it’s true that people keep judging us by our walk and posture. That’s why we need to give a good first impression to attract the audience while giving a speech because it will influence the audience of one or one hundred to make initial decisions about our capabilities before we even shake hands, begin a conversation or show our first slide.
Here I want to share some tips that I found while Google.

How to achieve good posture

a) Stand with your back to a wall and look straight ahead. Make sure your head and your back are touching the wall. As you remain standing there for a few minutes, periodically touch your shoulders to the wall and hold for 10 seconds.

* This automatically makes you pull in your tummy and stick out your chest. Take a few steps away from the wall, and practice the same techniques on your own.

b) Envision the John Hancock Building in Chicago, one of the tallest in the world. Now, stand up. Imagine your body is a tall, narrow building. Plant your feet 8-10 inches apart.

* Now, make sure your knees are directly about your feet, hips above your knees, stomach above your hips, chest above your stomach and head above your chest – such that if you took a piece of heavy string and dropped it from your nose, it would fall between your feet. Keep this image in mind as you stand around at networking events, meetings and receptions.

So, I hope by reading this tips even not from my own words can help people to start standing confidently and don’t care too much about the audience because we can’t stop audience to make judgement about us. Thank you.

How to Have Good Posture

“Visualize that your head is attached three hooks hanging form the ceiling. The idea is that you want your whole body to flow down from you head.”

Another way is to back up against the wall and press your head, shoulders, and heels against the wall. Leave some room between your lower back and the wall. Now walk away while maintaining this posture.

Feels weird does it not? However, this is confident posture. It makes your feel confident. It can help you overcome public speaking anxiety.

Confident posture helps attract the spread of the audience. It shouts that you feel comfortable and are in control.

When sitting you also want to main good posture. Not only does it make you feel confident but your voice will sound more confident also.

Speaking Posture

When speaking you want to lean forward slightly. Shift your weight forward to the balls of your feet. This will help plant your body. Your presentation will be more energetic. Keep your feet spread apart about 7-10 inches.

Have you seen speakers swinging back and forth like a small tree in the wind? Force yourself to avoid shifting back and forth. Moving back and forth on stage can be very effective, but only if they are not nervous movements

I had read an article about topic on confident posture and I would like to share with all. Of course all of us will be nervous to speech in front of audience. How we want to control our nervous? Why don’t u try to imagine u were to give a presentation in 30 minutes. I’m sure u will be nervous even in front of yourself. So, why don’t u try to act confident? You just practice yourself in front of mirror and I’m sure you will feel more relaxed and convinced. Not enough with the confident, you must have a good posture too. You can change your feelings just by changing your posture. Try it. Slouch down, act depressed, and shuffle as you walk. Did you feel more depressed? Now stand up straight. Put your head. You’ll feel more confident with great posture. Great posture conveys confidence and that you are in control and attract respect. Slouched posture emits negative energy and can subconsciously slightly push people away.

thats all..

A Confident posture can assume the audience about who you are.whether a confident person or else.

Slouching as you speak, moving from one foot to the other, or leaning on the lectern are not ways to engender an audience’s confidence in you and your message. You may not be aware of your bad posture, but since you are the focus of the audience’s attention, poor and uncertain posture will be obvious to your listeners.

There are many aspects of delivering a speech which you as the speaker cannot control, but proper posture is certainly one variable you can control. Begin your speech by standing on the balls of your feet with your feet 7 to 12 inches apart. This will give you balance for the rest of the body and will help you to be erect without looking robotic.

Treat the lectern as you would a hot stove. Touch gingerly but don’t lean on it as though it were a post. As you introduce a new point, take your hand off the lectern and gesture to show you are changing direction. Or when you are ready to discuss another aspect of the topic, take a step away from the lectern and toward your audience. Purposeful movement of any kind will help insure a natural and confident posture.

Avoid shifting the weight of your body as you speak. This can lead to standing on one foot or moving back and forth like a porch swing. Start out using the balls of the feet technique and occasionally take a step to show changes in the direction of your presentation.

Consider the mental image of "planting your feet" as you begin to speak. This will help stabilize your posture and keep you from "bouncing" on your feet while speaking. Planting conjures up the idea that you will stay in one place for a while.

Having your hands in front of you or at your side when you gesture and not in a pocket or clasped together will also make you have better posture and appear more poised.

With good posture you have a promising foundation for showing confidence and being in control of your speaking situation.

thank you..

Thanks for your tips on confident posture. I agreed with you. Actually, person’s thoughts are influenced by their posture although they are not aware of it. People assume their confidence is coming from their own thoughts. They don’t realize their posture is affecting how much they believe in what they’re thinking. If they did realize that, posture wouldn’t have such an effect. It turns out that our posture can also affect how we think about ourselves. Sitting up straight is something you can train yourself to do.

Here i want to add some tips for confident posture.

Adopt a powerful, confident posture. This will usually be standing upright, head facing slightly up, chest pushed forward and breathing fully and deeply. Think of a person that you have always perceived to be confident, what is his/her posture like? Adopt that posture. If possible, use a full size mirror to ensure that you’re doing it right. If you can’t think of anyone, just think what a confident person’s posture would probably be like. Get to know the details of the confident posture and remember it. Adopt that posture and start feeling more confident anytime and anywhere.

here's are some tips to achieve a good posture when giving a speech.

Keep your back straight.

Keep your shoulders nicely relaxed and comfortable. Don’t tense up.

Hold your chest out. Don’t let yourself curl inwards, as it is bad for projecting a nice resonant voice.

Another thing to remember when you’re giving your speech: Don’t fold your arms across yourself, because it gives off a bad signal, and it makes you look defensive.

Try not to tense your legs. A good technique used by professional speakers is to shift your weight from one foot to the other every now and again. You can do this to, to avoid looking tense.

Don’t lean on anything while you’re giving your speech. If you’re leaning forward on a table for example, you will be giving off an aggressive vibe without realizing.

Stand with your back to a wall and look straight ahead. Make sure your head and your back are touching the wall. As you remain standing there for a few minutes, periodically touch your shoulders to the wall and hold for 10 seconds.

Assalamualaikum.

Did you know that it only takes about 3 seconds for people to pass judgment on you when they meet you? There are tons of different non-verbal factors that come into play here (I'll keep you guessing and save them for future posts). The factor I'd like to look is at your posture.

You need to be able to take a nice deep breath and use your diaphragm to push that air out again.

i don't know whether the posture is right or not but if we want to be more confident we can see around the hall but not see the audience face. look upper than audince head because if you see the audience face you can see many expression and it can impact your speech for example, if you see once of the audience give not good expression to you and you think your speech is not good to him or others so, it can impact your confindence and what in your mind, you not remember. then your speech is become more bad.

Thanks for the tips madam. Here are some tips about Proper Posture for Public Speaking.

Your posture is the first thing you say about yourself in a speech. Are you trustworthy, confident, intelligent? Correct stance will go a long way toward communicating these qualities.

What good posture is:

*joints all aligned up and down
*spine in natural curvature
*chest up and out
*shoulders back and down
*hips tucked
*relaxed and natural.

What good posture is not:

*tight, tense, stiff
*shoulders up and tight
*puffed out, nose up
*spine unnaturally straight, or
*spine unnaturally curved
*slouching

How to make good posture a habit in your speech.
-Practice you speech two ways. Give your speech in a mirror, paying special attention to your posture. Then give your speech lying flat on the ground. This will both help you to straighten out your back and to breath deeply, utilizing your diaphragm. When you go return to standing, try to replicate your posture and breathing on the ground.

Exercises for good posture :

*Shoulder Circles: Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Swing your arms backwards in a circle. Repeat 30 times.

*Back Extension: Lie down on an elevated platform (chairs end-to-end, a bed, etc) with your chest and head over the edge. Place your hands behind your head, then raise your upper body using your back muscles. Repeat slowly 10 times.

*Stretches: Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Interlock your fingers in front of you. Push out with your palms facing away from you, and you should feel the stretch across the top of your back. Slowly lift up until your hands are above your head, then go back as far as possible.

Happy speaking!

Thank you.

hello and assalamualaikum to madam mimi, readers and viewers,

Postures is a part of important roles in presentation skills. You dont slump, lay down sit and etc. in presentations.

Here are some tips for you to practice,

Have you ever watched a speaker sway or rock at the podium or in front of a room? It's very distracting and can detract from even the most interesting presentation.

How you appear to the audience will have an impact on their reaction to what you are going to tell them. Your posture and the way you conduct yourself on the platform is an important part of your presentation. Your objective is to be comfortable and controlled while you are presenting. You want the audience to see that you are relaxed and in control (no matter how you really feel!).

Stand up and spread your feet about 6 to 8 inches apart, parallel to each other with your toes pointed straight ahead to achieve a comfortable speaking position. Then, flex your knees and put your weight on the balls of your feet. Standing in this position will stop any swaying or rocking motion and will diminish any distracting heel movements.

Stand up straight and face the audience head-on.

Reading from prepared notes or a script contributes to the problem of lowering your chin.
One way to eliminate this is to use 8 ½ x 11 inch paper. Write on only the top two-thirds of the page so your eye doesn't move down or you drop your chin, which also makes your voice go down.

If you must read word for word from a manuscript, use the scope technique -- slide your thumb and pointer finger down the page, scoping one section at a time. This will help you to find your place after you look up at the audience. It is critical that the manuscript is easy to read.

When you are seated, you want to look energized and confident. You don't want to lean or slouch or appear too comfortable or relaxed. Proper seated posture when you are presenting (or just want to look good at a meeting) is sitting straight up in your chair, spine straight, with your feet flat on the floor and hands open on the table.

Assalamualaikum madam,

I was read the article of "public speaking: confident posture". Here I want to share a tips how to look confident with a good posture.

You can change your feelings just by changing your posture. Try it. Slouch down, act depressed, and shuffle as you walk. Did you feel more depressed? Now stand up straight. Put your head. You’ll feel more confident with great posture.

Great posture conveys confidence and that you are in control and attracts respect. Slouched posture emits negative energy and can subconsciously slightly push people away.

Next time you are in public, watch those with good posture and those with bad. Feel the vibes coming off of them. You’ll notice the difference.

I hopes within this tips we can improve our public speaking. thank you.

Assalamualaikum madam,

I am totally agree with this article. This is because the posture of the speaker is the first thing that the audience will look. I know, many people have low of self-esteem including me but we can change it as long as we take the positive thinking rather than think that the audience will only look at our negative part.

Here, I want to share one way to have a good posture in public speaking. We have to back up against the wall and press our head, shoulders and heels against it. Then, leave some room between your lower back and the wall. Now, you can walk away and maintaining this posture. I know we would feel weird for the first time but this is the confident posture. It will makes we feel confident and help us overcome our public speaking anxiety.

I hopes we can use this tip in order to get our audience's attention and deliver a good public speaking.Thank you.

Thank you madam for sharing. all the tips above is really useful. And I have some more tips and usually when speaking we want to lean forward slightly. Shift your weight forward to the balls of your feet. This will help plant your body. Your presentation will be more energetic. Keep your feet spread apart about 7-10 inches.
Force yourself to avoid shifting back and forth. Moving back and forth on stage can be very effective, but only if they are not nervous movements.

Thank you.

Assalamualaikum madam mimi

I have read your post and i 100% agree with your tips. Here i want to share with all of you some tips about confident posture.

1. Stance and Body Movements

~ Good posture portrays confidence. Square your feet shoulder-width apart and plant flat on the ground. Swaying or too much movement can be distracting to your listeners.
~A natural position for your arms is relaxed by your sides. To emphasize strong points you'll want to use movements that are deliberate and precise but look natural and spontaneous.
~Be aware of habits you might have like crossing your arms, leaning against a wall or the podium or tapping a pen. This might also be distracting to your audience or tell them that you are uninterested or unconfident.
~Practise your speech in front of a mirror to evaluate your presentation style and body movements and adjust accordingly. Try many different ways to find a comfortable balance of gestures to use in front of an audience.

2. Voice Projection

~Sometimes tone of voice can have more impact than the message. Put feeling and energy into your voice by practising vocal skills. You can add interest and variety to your speech by:
*varying the pitch throughout sentences to convey emotion (high and low)
*change the speed of your words to dramatize the audience
*use pauses and silences instead of uhs, umms and you knows
*increase and decrease the volume of your voice to emphasize main points and draw in the listeners (soft and loud)
*add vitality so your voice never sounds monotonous or emotionless

3.Eye contact

~Good eye contact helps your audience feel more relaxed and builds confidence in your speaking knowledge and ability. Maintain eye contact by knowing your speech well enough that you need only occasionally glance at your notes.
~Find a few friendly faces in the audience that react to your message and concentrate on delivering your speech to them. Keep eye contact for four to five seconds at a time, then move to someone else.

Thats all from me.
Thank You.

With good posture you have a promising foundation for showing confidence and being in control of your speaking situation

Salam to Madam Mimi....

Today, I would like to share one entry that describe about presentation body language: hands and open posture.

There are three things your hands should avoid touching during a presentation; your chest, your hips, and each other!

When we feel insecure, we use defensive body postures. Our hands might clutch before us, interlocked fingers flexing in angst, or alternately they might find a convenient object and start to fidget compulsively with it. All such gestures are unconscious and it’s only when we see ourselves on video that we discover what distracting gestures our hands get up to while we are speaking!

The optimal posture for presenters is to keep the upper body “open”; free from defensive body postures. This leaves the question of what to do with those flapping, fidgeting hands, and is why many presenters use props to anchor their hands, the two most popular being pens and notes:

*Pens

Hold a pen with it’s right end in your right hand, and it’s left end in your left. Your hands are now occupied, while being physically prevented from meeting by the pen between them. If you need to gesture to something on the slide, the pen becomes a convenient pointer.

Make sure the pen you use isn’t the type with a clicker to extend and retract the nib, or you might subconsciously click your way through the presentation instead!

*Notes

As with the pen, notes can also be an anchor. Hold them by their two bottom corners and, once again, you are securely in the open body position. If you want to gesture or point then you can do so, before returning your hand to it’s note-holding position.

Carry a minimum of ten sheets even if your notes only cover the top page. Ten pages have a rigidity that a single page does not. If you have the slightest hand-tremble, a single page will amplify it, whereas ten pages will absorb and mask it.

Over time you will become used to working in the open posture and can free your hands to use as tools for adding emphasis and style. Initially though, it can feel more comfortable, as many presenters do, to use well chosen props to keep that posture open.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Assalamualaikum Pn Mimi, thanks again for your tips that is to gain confident by have a good posture. I also think good posture can improve your confident in giving speech because an early expression of audience toward you is depend on your posture. Posture also will show you how confident you are while giving speech.

Here i got some tips i got from the internet that i think is useful in giving speech.

How to Have Good Posture

My chiropractic told me the following.

“Visualize that your head is attached three hooks hanging from the ceiling.

I think that tips can help many student who want to give their speech. Thank you!!

Assalamualaikum Madam..

Thanks for the tips that you give. Here I want to share an information about some Dos and Don’ts about Posture:

1, Don’t jingle!
* Putting one or both hands into your pockets and jingling loose change or keys is a nervous habit some people fall into.
* It’s distracting to the audience and takes away from your message.
* A good tip is to leave change, keys and everything else you normally carry in your pockets, somewhere safe when you’re speaking.

2, Don’t fidget.
* Even if your hands are not in your pockets, don’t rub nails or fingers together or any engage in any other type of fidgeting.

3, No Fig Leaf stance.
* Hands crossed in front of you at the crotch, or over your rear end, or anywhere else, indicates a non-openness.
* The military ‘At Ease’ position, crossing your arms in front of you or clasping hands in front or behind you are also to be avoided.

4, Don’t rock from your heels to your toes.
* This would be very distracting to the audience, and interfere with your message.

5, Don’t sway!
* I remember one of my Toastmasters Meetings where the speaker was a college professor. Delivering his speech from behind the lectern, he swayed from side to side. I was his Evaluator that evening, and I started off mimicking his swaying and asked, “Michael, did you ever spend any time on a ship?”
* Important: I would not have made this remark had I not known Michael well. He was an accomplished and experienced speaker who just got into a ‘silly groove’. Like most Toastmasters, Michael attended meetings and regularly spoke to improve his talks. He sought productive feedback.

6, Don’t lean on the lectern.
* It conveys too relaxed of an attitude and gives the impression that you don’t care.

7, Don’t cross your arms.
* People do that when they are feeling defensive. Be especially aware of this during your Q&A session. If you do this, the audience will pick up on it, and it is not the message you want them to receive.

8, Do hold your head high and your chin slightly up.
* This gives the audience the impression that you’re in control. (Watch clips of President Obama for good examples of this.)

9, Don’t look down,
* I know, I know – that’s where your notes are!
* Try to briefly glance to check your note, then look at the audience. this is one more reason to use a Mind Map, with pictures and symbols, rather than ‘linear notes’ to deliver your talk.

Good posture should be natural and relaxed, not stiff and tense. As with all other elements of your speaking, verbal and non-verbal, it takes practice.

Practice in front of a mirror, ask friends to critique this non-verbal part of your talk, and look at your posture on videos of your talks.

Thank you

Assalamualaikum madam..
This article gives us information that sometimes when we make a bad posture we give bad impression to audience. Like you write in this article “only takes about 3 seconds for people to pass judgement on you when they meet you”. Body posture will give impact to our speech. So, it is important for us to prepare a confident posture.
Here, I want to give some of tips :
1. Know what you are talking about. The more you know about your subject, the easier it will be for you to feel confident speaking about it.

2. Confident public speaking requires that you are comfortable giving something of yourself. Anecdotes and small personal stories can be a good way to connect with your audience, but they won't work if you found the stories online and just memorized them before your speech. Keep it real.

3. Don't worry too much about who your audience is and what they may or may not like. As long as you have something to say and keep your topic and language within what's commonly considered decent and normal for discussion in most crowds, you will be fine. There is always the risk of upsetting someone in the audience, but confident public speaking is all about delivering your message unapologetically; your job is to deliver the speech and share the information, and not to make sure you pleased everybody in the crowd.

4. Stand up tall and deliver your speech with your gaze looking out on the audience and not down on you paper. Keeping a confident posture will not only help you look more confident; you will also be sending a signal to your subconscious about how confident you feel.

5. Practicing your presentation in front of a mirror is also helpful because it gives you hints on how to improve your posture, body language and gestures. Get someone you trust to listen to you give your talk and ask them to give you their opinion and any suggestions that may help you.

6. Admit to yourself that you're nervous. Acknowledge your fears, but also realize that you can overcome them. Just remind yourself that you have something valuable to say and that the audience isn't likely to be hostile towards you.

7. Start strong and end strong. A strong introduction will propel you through the rest of your speech and wipe out any fear you begin with. Ending strong will also counteract a shaky beginning due to nervousness.

8. Try to stand with good posture because this will make you look confident even if you are not. Use hand gestures as necessary to explain yourself and your points. Try to pace yourself and not talk too quickly, and remember to pause at moments when a pause is needed, so that you can catch your breath and get your thoughts together.

9. If you really struggle to have confidence to speak to publicly, try to build confidence a step at a time. Try speaking in front of smaller groups first and gradually increase the size of your audience. You could also join a group like a drama group or poetry club. Groups or clubs like this will encourage you to gain confidence and will offer exercises that you can do to build your confidence.

10. The best thing you can do is to relax. Don’t worry too much about. Every public speaker starts somewhere and everyone has nerves, so just relax and try to enjoy it. The more relaxed you are, the easier you will find it and better you will come off to your audience. Before starting your talk or speech, take a few deep breaths and try to relax. If you still feel uncontrollably nervous you could always try the good old “picture your audience in their underwear” trick!
Confident public speaking doesn't have to be a struggle! Download hypnosis sessions for confident speaking habits and success!
I hope this is tips useful to everyone. Thank you.

Salam.Madam. i like your article, becouse confident posture is very important in the way of giving a speech.

Here, i want to share how to be more confident in giving a speech..

It's easy to look confident. Ready, set...stand in front of a full-length mirror. View yourself from the front, and then from the side. Watch as your image is transformed by doing the following:

1. Stand up straight: tummy in, chest out, shoulders back.
2. Smile, raise your eyebrows slightly, and show some teeth!
3. Then say “Good morning” as you respect to others.

Now that your appearance is more confident, let's help you become more confident within.

Don't be afraid to maintain eye contact with others. This is very important in life if you wish to obtain someone's respect and/or trust. Also, don't be afraid to offer someone praise or a compliment when it is genuine and deserved.

In a social setting, such as getting coffee in the office breakroom, when you find yourself keeping quiet for lack of words, try something new. Smile at the other person and initiate a conversation. You can keep it simple by discussing the weather, or mentioning an event from the past weekend. Once you begin to feel positive responses from your social enviroment, your confidence will begin to grow.

Pat yourself on the back! When you accomplish a goal such as getting an A on your paper, a raise at work, or paying all your bills this month, reward yourself! At the very least, PRAISE yourself. Don't wait for others' acknowledgement to enjoy your moment of success. If/when others voice appreciation of your actions, accept it and feel good in addition to your own good feelings about yourself.

thank you.....

Assalamualaikum to Pn. Mimi. Thank you for this very helpful tips. Now I want to share 3 steps about how to have good posture.

Step 1
We all know that we should "sit up straight," but how do we really do that? The best way to have good posture when sitting is to imagine yourself as a marionette on a single string. Imagine that the string is attached to the center of your head, and you are being straight pulled up by someone directly above you.

Step 2
Think about what will happen. Your back will be straight, and your spine will straighten itself out. Your shoulders will drop since there aren't any strings pulling them up. Most of us walk around with tense shoulders, which can lead to a variety of neck pains.

Step 3
Another component of good posture is to be very aware of your breathing. Most of us breath very shortly and very rapidly. This leads to tension, which in turn leads to bad posture. Try to breathe slowly, deeply, and mindfully. This will relax your body, and in turn allow you to have better posture.

Tips & Warnings
Make it a point to do a self-check every so often. Do a mental scan of your body from head to toe to see if there is any tension, or if your body is not properly aligned. The head, shoulders and the spine are typically the biggest culprits.

How to Give a Speech with Confidence
Instructions
Things You'll Need:
• Your speech
• Yourself
1. Step 1
First things first, write out your speech. This is so helpful for so many people, including myself. Even if you can't use note cards or written notes during your speech, going over your speech with a hard copy many times will help you so much in the end.
2. Step 2
Another great way to get comfortable with your speech is to record yourself saying your speech, then play it back over and over again. Recite your speech with your recorded speech. You don't need a fancy recording device. Many cell phones have recording capabilities. This will allow you to accurately space out your words and give you a round about idea of how long your speech is going to be (time wise).
3. Step 3
Eye contact during a speech is critical. If you can use note cards, many people fall into the habit of constantly looking down, even though they already know their speeches by heart. If you feel uncomfortable looking your audience straight in the eyes, try looking to something relatively close to them. For example, try looking at the back of their chairs, or the top of their heads. Focus on their glasses, or possibly their noses. This will at least give you the illusion of eye contact, making you look (and feel!) more confident.
4. Step 4
Posture is another important part of a speech. If you are hiding behind a poster, or shrinking behind a podium, your audience will notice. Stand up straight. Body language says more than you know. If you know you have a habit of shrinking behind a podium, (and you are a girl) try wearing high heels (men: try wearing shoes that give you the appearance of being taller). This way, even if you do hide behind something, your height will almost cancel that little factor out.
5. Step 5
Dress appropriately. Your clothes will say a lot about you. If you are giving an important speech, dress nicely. No blue jeans, no old sneakers, no tee shirts. Do your hair. Put on make-up (if that applies to you). If you dress nice, you will feel nice. If you dress confident, trust me, you will feel confident.
6. Step 6
When giving your speech, remember to breathe! Many times anxiety will make us rush through a speech. By the time we're done the first few sentences, we're out of breathe and almost panting (which makes you feel even more nervous because now you can't catch your breath!). Just remember to space out your words and to breathe naturally. It's better to have an extra second or two between your sentences than to have your sentences become jumbled together while you are heaving for air.
7. Step 7
Finally, practice, practice, practice. The more speeches you make, the more comfortable you will become in front of an audience. Remember who your audience is too (Giving a speech in front of your peers is a lot different than giving a speech in front of strangers. Giving a speech to a bunch of children in kindergarten is a whole lot different than giving a speech to your boss and his bosses).
8. Step 8
Just remember these few and easy steps, an

Given that 93 percent of your communication impact comes from the way you look and sound, then as a speaker it's important to master delivery skills. I have captured the seven delivery skills that are key to being a dynamic speaker.

Smile, Posture, Eye Communication, Appearance, Kinesics, Expressive Vocals, Resting Places for your hands.

Your stance in front of a room says a lot about how comfortable and confident you appear. Picture a woman standing with all her weight on her right leg, her right hand grasping her left elbow, her left foot grinding the floor like she was putting out a cigarette. Or how about this? A man standing with his left foot crossed over to the other side of his right foot, his hands shoved in his pockets, swaying side to side. Neither conjures up an image of someone self-assured and confident, does it?

Your presentation power starts with your posture. And the key is a balanced stance. Distribute your weight evenly on both feet. Stand tall, don't slouch. Pull your shoulders back; lift your chin up. Try this visualization: Envision a flexible pole running from floor to ceiling right through your spine. Like a bumper car attached to a metal rod, you can move all around, but you can't slouch or lean on one leg. This is not to imply ramrod straight military posture. The idea here is that your rib cage is gently lifted: your legs and arms are free to move around, but you can't give in to the tendency to slouch or cock your hip out to the side. That tall, balanced posture will give you a more poised and confident appearance.

Keep in mind that you don't have to plant your feet like they were nailed to the floor. Movement is good. You can stride from side to side of the stage, or from the lectern to your screen. The key here is purposeful movement, not pacing or rocking or swaying, or what I call nervous dance steps. One way to ensure this is to take at least two steps in any direction. If you take just one, it's not purposeful. So a step, pause, a step, pause creates a sensation of nervous footwork. That's why I call it dance steps. If that's a challenge for you, try putting a coin in both shoes to remind yourself to plant your feet. Only move when you can make it purposeful.
Since we're talking about movement, let's mention a common practice of some speakers, namely, walking out into the audience. It is purposeful movement and can make the speaker feel more connected to the audience. But I urge caution at making a habit of this for three reasons:

1. First of all, what seats in a room are taken first? The ones in the back, right? For whatever reason, people often prefer to sit the farthest distance from the front of the room. They did not choose to be close to the speaker, so as the speaker, I hesitate to encroach on those invisible boundaries they set up.

2. Secondly, when you walk deep into an audience, it means that those in the front will have to turn around to see you. You're making some members of the audience have to work to see you, which doesn't seem fair if they're sitting where it should be easy to see you.

3. Thirdly, when those in front do turn around to look at you, what are they seeing? The back of you. I never deliberately present my backside to an audience. Not only is it rude to turn your back on someone, but I never know what my backside looks like!

So stand tall, be balanced, and move purposefully and your posture will convey a message of confidence and in command.

Here i want to share something about the posture when we give a speech. This article had been writed by Stephen Boyd at March 31, 2004.

I really hope, i can improved the posture and others thing that can help in delivering a speech.

Assalamualaikum Madam Mimi.

Thank for this tips. I think this tips useful to us for make a good public speaking. So here, I want to share some tips.

Speaking or giving a talk publicly can be very nerve racking. If you find it hard to speak in front of a crowd then doing so may make you panicky, break out in a sweat or just extremely nervous. To try and avoid nervousness and to speak confidently it is best to be prepared.

Unless in can’t be helped and you have a set topic to speak on, always try to speak on a subject you know well and may be comfortable to talk about. The better you know the topic and the more information you know about your subject matter, then the easier it will be for you to talk about it. Try to prepare your talk or speech first. Write out exactly what you are going to say or at least some strong points to go on. The more prepared you are the more confident you will feel about giving your speech or talk.

Unless you will be standing behind something like a lector or table, try to put the points for your talk on to small cards that you can hold in the palm of your hand. This way it will be easier for you as you will not be struggle with sheets of paper. It also it hides your notes from your audience.

If you can, only check down at your notes every now and then or as needed. Try to look at your audience as you talk to them. If you find it daunting to look at your audience and all the faces, try looking just above their heads and be sure to move your eyes around the room, so that everyone feels like you are talking to them.

Try to stand with good posture because this will make you look confident even if you are not. Use hand gestures as necessary to explain yourself and your points. Try to pace yourself and not talk too quickly, and remember to pause at moments when a pause is needed, so that you can catch your breath and get your thoughts together.

Confidence can be gained through practice. Once you have practiced something and feel safe in the knowledge that you can do it, in this case – when you know what you are talking about, you will feel more confident about doing it. Practice your speech or talk as much as you can prior to your speaking engagement. Get someone you trust to listen to you give your talk and ask them to give you their opinion and any suggestions that may help you. Although it may sound stupid, practicing in front of a mirror is another good way. This helps to you to see what you look like as you give your speech. You can get your posture right and see how your hand movements and so on look to the audience.

Thank You..

Thank you for your good tips. Beside your tips, i would like to add some tips, that in my opinion is good for us.

Not only our posture that people judge but it include with our dressed up. If we wear the dirty cloth, the audience will think that the speaker cannot be trusted. This is because the people who cannot take care of their self, not have qualify to give other people some advice. The clean and proper dress up can make the speaker more confident.

I have already mentioned before in my previous comment that confident is important in order to achieve the best result. To have a good product we have to have a good ingredient so we need to put much effort on it. In order to get people’s attention we have to stand in a confident posture. It will help us to be more comfortable during delivering our speech. You will feel very relieve if you could find your best posture. Here, I’m stressing that; confident posture will bring you to a high level of a good presentation.thank you.,=)

Assalamualaikum,,

Thank you madam because post this good tip. I agree with all of that. Proper posture will help you with your breathing and voice projection during your talk. By standing up straight with your chin slightly higher than horizontal you are actually opening up your airway. This is important for voice projection since your voice travels on your exhaling breath. You need to be able to take a nice deep breath and use your diaphragm to push that air out again.Push your shoulders back, raise your chin, pull in that belly and stick out that chest. It's amazing how when you look confident you also feel more confident. Enter the room like you own the place. You have every right to be there. Everyone who is there is there because they want to hear what you have to say. Your thoughts and words are important. Your posture should also show that. That all from me. Thank you.

" Remember that people judge you from the minute they see you, not the minute you step on stage or to the front of the boardroom. Begin preparing yourself for your talk before you enter the room you'll be speaking in."

i agree with this point, where people will try to determine about the presenter when audience found/looking the presenter for the first time to judge by the first aspect about the presenter...

normally the people try to get presenter character for the fist before the presenter want to speaking.. so confident posture important to give positive character to presenter...

thank you.

the implementation of good posture can help you in giving a speech. if you don't have good posture, people will start to doubt you whether you can do it or not. this will make them not interesting to hear your speech.

so, i highly agreed with the article you have post. it is very important to have good posture when delivering a speech.

Assalamualaikum mdm Mimi…

I’ve read your article about confident posture. I would like to add some information on how to build self confident.

1. Dress Sharp
Although clothes don’t make the man, they certainly affect the way he feels about himself. No one is more conscious of your physical appearance than you are. When you don’t look good, it changes the way you carry yourself and interact with other people. Use this to your advantage by taking care of your personal appearance.
2. Good Posture
Similarly, the way a person carries herself tells a story. People with slumped shoulders and lethargic movements display a lack of self confidenceBy practicing good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Stand up straight, keep your head up, and make eye contact. You’ll make a positive impression on others and instantly feel more alert and empowered.
3. Personal Commercial
One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to a motivational speech. Unfortunately, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few and far between. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence boost.
4. Gratitude
When you focus too much on what you want, the mind creates reasons why you can’t have it. This leads you to dwell on your weaknesses. The best way to avoid this is consciously focusing on gratitude. Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for..
5. Speak up
During group discussions many people never speak up because they’re afraid that people will judge them for saying something stupid. This fear isn’t really justified. Generally, people are much more accepting than we imagine. In fact most people are dealing with the exact same fears. By making an effort to speak up at least once in every group discussion, you’ll become a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts, and recognized as a leader by your peers.

So,if we keep practicing with using this tips, I’m sure it will gain our confident in peaking.
Thank you.

salam.. posture of body so important to delivered the speech..
so now, i would like to share with you the tips for good in posture..

Your posture is the first thing you say about yourself in a speech. Are you trustworthy, confident, intelligent? Correct stance will go a long way toward communicating these qualities.
What good posture is:

joints all aligned up and down
spine in natural curvature
chest up and out
shoulders back and down
hips tucked
relaxed and natural.

What good posture is not:

tight, tense, stiff
shoulders up and tight
puffed out, nose up
spine unnaturally straight, or
spine unnaturally curved
slouching

How to make good posture a habit in your speech. Practice you speech two ways. Give your speech in a mirror, paying special attention to your posture. Then give your speech lying flat on the ground. This will both help you to straighten out your back and to breath deeply, utilizing your diaphragm. When you go return to standing, try to replicate your posture and breathing on the ground.

Exercises for good posture.

Shoulder Circles: Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Swing your arms backwards in a circle. Repeat 30 times.

Back Extension: Lie down on an elevated platform (chairs end-to-end, a bed, etc) with your chest and head over the edge. Place your hands behind your head, then raise your upper body using your back muscles. Repeat slowly 10 times.

Stretches: Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Interlock your fingers in front of you. Push out with your palms facing away from you, and you should feel the stretch across the top of your back. Slowly lift up until your hands are above your head, then go back as far as possible.

Happy speaking!

Most people judge the minute they saw us. Even if you pass by an unknown person, they already judge you as a good or bad person. Who knows right? In the article above stated how to get a confident posture that will let the audience see you as they want to hear your speech and you deserve to talk. With a confident posture will make the audience see you like you are prepared and ready for every question they wanted to throw to you. Besides that, it will slightly hide your nervousness

Salam Madam...

Self confidence is the difference between feeling unstoppable and feeling scared out of your wits. Your perception of yourself has an enormous impact on how others perceive you.

Good posture will somehow help to build self confidence. When interacting with other people, body posture is everything.

As you can see, the use of body posture to convey meaning is more complex than originally thought. Body postures can convey everything from personal emotions and feelings to personal interest.

Thank You :)

Thank you for your post that can help me to improve and I'll get more knowledge about public speaking.

"Remember that people judge you from the minute they see you, not the minute you step on stage or to the front of the boardroom. Begin preparing yourself for your talk before you enter the room you'll be speaking in."

- As what you said people will judge you from the minute they see you eventhough they don't know you. By that, they will judge you whether you're good or not. So before you start your speech, you must have a good preperation to feel confident in stage. so that you will not look nervous. So people will know that you have get ready to start your speech.

"In addition, proper posture will help you with your breathing and voice projection during your talk. By standing up straight with your chin slightly higher than horizontal you are actually opening up your airway. This is important for voice projection since your voice travels on your exhaling breath. You need to be able to take a nice deep breath and use your diaphragm to push that air out again."

- I totally agree confident posture helps with our breathing and voice projection during our talk. Before you start your speech, you must take a deep breath to avoid you nervous. You must have a smooth breathing because it is important to have a good speech.

Actually, confident posture is the posture that you are comfortable with that will lead to your confidence. So that, be yourself, and enjoy your speech.

Put the shoulder back is the main point that attract me and I saw many speaker who are confident mostly look like a tough person. The conclusion is although we are not confident, we must not show the listeners that we are not confident but at least we show that we have a right that the listeners must listen to our speech.

Assalamualaikum..Anyone can learn about public speaking with confidence by following some simple tips such as:

-Find our more about your audience. The more you know about them, the better you can prepare.

-Tell a story and make a point. Don’t assault your audience with facts and information. Tell them a story of something that happened to you that illustrates a point. There are high chances of them remembering the story and your point. The speakers who are extraordinary communicators never download facts – they have a conversation with the audience. They are storytellers.

-Rehearse the first few lines well. This will help you to make a strong start and help calm the initial nerves.

-Focus on your body language and tone of voice. People notice these first before focusing on the content.

-Don’t memorise your speech. Just remember the key points and deliver your speech around those points. You don’t have to then think backwards and to recollect your lines. This will allow you to free up your mind to focus on delivery.

-Dress sharp. This will make you feel confident.

SALAM MADAM.
Thanks for your tips on this post.I ll use it during the speech. There is some of the confident posture that i want to share.

1)speak with confidence.
A confident and expressive voice plays an important role in being effective when presenting or delivering a speech. When you speak with confidence you use your voice expressively to effectively get your message across to the audience.

2)Posture is important and coveys a message.
It tells the audience that you are in control. It conveys the message that you have confidence in your competence.Good, straight Posture indicates leadership and confidence. Hunched shoulders indicate lack of confidence and possibly low self-esteem and Slouching to one side delivers the opposite message. It shows disinterest.

Thank you.

Confident is a speech is very important, without the confident, the speaker will look kind a silly to the audience, and the main point of the speech will not achieve, the gain confident, the speaker have to
Practice There is wisdom in the old saying, "practice makes perfect." The more you speak in public, the easier it will be and the more your confidence will grow. So just make yourself do it whenever the opportunity arises Be prepared. If you feel prepared and you know your topic well, you will feel more confident about your ability to speak about it. If you are speaking on an unfamiliar topic, research and learn what you can so you will feel confident when the time comes to speak publicly.

Keep it simple. Both you and the audience are more likely to feel lost and confused during your speech if you overload it with data. Trying to fit in every single detail that you know about a given topic will only increase the chance that you forget parts of your speech. Your audience may feel overwhelmed and just zone out. Instead, narrow your topic down to the most important details and choose a main focus. It will help you-and the audience-focus.
Rehearse but do not memorize. If you try to memorize your speech, you may be causing yourself undue stress. There's no rule that speeches must be memorized-in fact, you can come off sounding robotic and monotone. Instead just rehearse your speech, making yourself comfortable enough with the content that you can improvise. You will come off sounding more natural and confident if you can speak conversationally, rather than as if you were performing a soliloquy

thank you... =/

In my mind, what about the people that don't have normal physical? Did people just see them and ignore them just because their physical body don't like the normal person? If something like that happen how they want to have a confident posture if people just see them and walk away. If people just see the speaker like that, it doesn't fair for them.

I hope Madam can help me with this question that running in my mind. Thank you Madam.

Salam,

I would like to share a research led by Richard Petty that shows how good posture boosts confidence.

Good posture can boost confidence and promote self-assurance in people, according to a new study.

The researchers led by Richard Petty conducted the study on 71 Ohio State University students.

“Most of us were taught that sitting up straight gives a good impression to other people,” said Petty.

“But it turns out that our posture can also affect how we think about ourselves. If you sit up straight, you end up convincing yourself by the posture you’re in,” he added.

The students were asked to sit up straight and push out their chest, or to slouch, reports The China Daily.

They were then asked about the positive or negative traits they’d show as a hypothetical future employee.

“Their confident, upright posture gave them more confidence in their own thoughts, whether they were positive or negative. People assume their confidence is coming from their own thoughts. They don’t realize their posture is affecting how much they believe in what they’re thinking. If they did realize that, posture wouldn’t have such an effect,” said Petty.

In a similar experiment involving different students, ” participants didn’t report feeling more confident in the upright position than they did in the slouched position, even though those in the upright position did report more confidence in the thoughts they generated,” said Petty.

Assalamualaikum madam...
Firstly, I would like to say thanks for post this text. Because from this text I can improve my confident when I giving a speech. Now I want to share a little how to be more confident when we giving a speech, there it is.
# Eye contact

* Good eye contact helps your audience feel more relaxed and builds confidence in your speaking knowledge and ability. Maintain eye contact by knowing your speech well enough that you need only occasionally glance at your notes.
* Find a few friendly faces in the audience that react to your message and concentrate on delivering your speech to them. Keep eye contact for four to five seconds at a time, then move to someone else.

# Stance and Body Movements

* Good posture portrays confidence. Square your feet shoulder-width apart and plant flat on the ground. Swaying or too much movement can be distracting to your listeners.
* A natural position for your arms is relaxed by your sides. To emphasize strong points you'll want to use movements that are deliberate and precise but look natural and spontaneous.
* Be aware of habits you might have like crossing your arms, leaning against a wall or the podium or tapping a pen. This might also be distracting to your audience or tell them that you are uninterested or unconfident.
* Practice your speech in front of a mirror to evaluate your presentation style and body movements and adjust accordingly. Try many different ways to find a comfortable balance of gestures to use in front of an audience.

# Facial Expressions

* Pleasant facial expressions help to establish a warm and positive relationship with your audience. A smile lets them know that you are human and trustworthy, giving those more reason to accept your ideas.
* Expressions in your face capture the mood of your speech and keep the audience involved.

# Appropriate Dress

* Good choice of attire helps establish respect with your audience. Before you arrive to give your presentation, ask others for their opinion on your choice of clothing and appropriateness for the occasion.

# Voice Projection

* Sometimes tone of voice can have more impact than the message. Put feeling and energy into your voice by practicing vocal skills. You can add interest and variety to your speech by:
o varying the pitch throughout sentences to convey emotion (high and low)
o change the speed of your words to dramatize the audience
o use pauses and silences instead of uhs, umms and you knows
o increase and decrease the volume of your voice to emphasize main points and draw in the listeners (soft and loud)
o add vitality so your voice never sounds monotonous or emotionless
* Practice vocal variety every day and soon it will become automatic. Tape your voice and evaluate where changes may need to occur.

# Audience Involvement

* Involve your audience by: asking questions, talking to them directly (not to your material) and sparking their interest. This helps establish a relaxed rapport with your audience.
* Use the content of your speech to involve the audience. Consider strong, catchy openings, visuals or demonstrations or ask for a volunteer's assistance.

Assalamualaikum pn mimi,

i agreed with your article about the confident body posture. confident body posture is important to get attraction from the audience.
for me, i always nervous when i at the stages to give a speech. when i stand in the stages, i always just hold to just one feet to balance my body, i also don't have a good self-confident when i give a speech, that's why i cannot get the attraction from the audience.
thank to you madam because give that tips, i hope i can use this tips to my coming soon presentation speech.
thank you.
